RPE to Percentage of 1RM Calculator

This RPE calculator for powerlifting converts between RPE, reps, and training weight in both directions. Find the right weight for a target RPE, or work out the estimated RPE of a set you already completed — plus a full RPE chart calculator reference table for every rep and RPE combination from 1–12 reps and RPE 6–10.

How the RPE to Percentage of 1RM Relationship Works

Each rep performed further from failure lowers the percentage of your 1RM you're using — and each rep in reserve (RIR) works the same way. This calculator combines reps performed and RIR into a total "distance from max effort" figure, then converts that into an estimated percentage using the same rep-to-max relationship that underlies common 1RM formulas like Epley's.

RPE Calculator — Frequently Asked Questions

What does RPE mean in weight training?

RPE stands for Rate of Perceived Exertion — a 1–10 scale describing how hard a set felt. RPE 10 means no reps left, RPE 9 means one rep left, RPE 8 means two reps left (2 RIR).

How do I convert RPE to percentage of 1RM?

Enter your 1RM, target RPE, and target reps into an RPE calculator like this one. It combines reps performed with reps in reserve to estimate the percentage of your max you should use.

What is a good RPE for building strength?

RPE 7–9 (1–3 reps in reserve) for most sessions allows consistent progressive overload without excessive fatigue. Reserve RPE 9.5–10 for occasional testing or peaking phases.

How accurate is an RPE chart calculator?

It's an estimate, not an exact science — perceived exertion varies by individual and day. Use it as a starting point for training weight, then adjust based on how the set actually feels.

What is the difference between RPE and RIR?

RIR counts reps left in the tank; RPE is a 1–10 rating where 10 minus RPE equals RIR. RPE 8 = 2 RIR, RPE 9 = 1 RIR, RPE 10 = 0 RIR (failure).
