Introduction
Most lifters ask the same question each workout: should I add weight today? A simple decision framework removes guesswork and prevents both under-loading and ego loading.
This guide complements the complete progressive overload guide with clear rules.
The Add-Weight Checklist
Add weight only if all are true:
- You hit all sets and reps
- Technique was consistent
- Effort was within target (for example 1-3 reps in reserve)
- Recovery was normal this week
If one fails, hold load and progress through reps or recovery.
Rep-Range Trigger Method
Use load increases at the top of a rep range:
- Example range: 8-12 reps
- Hit 12 reps on all sets with good form
- Increase load next session
- Return to 8-9 reps and climb again
Summary
- Increase load when objective criteria are met.
- Use rep ranges to trigger progression consistently.
- Holding weight is often a smart progression decision, not failure.
